To be honest, you’ve definitely gone to a fancy party and seen some pretty little cupcake stands on the tables. They look a lot fancier than they actually are. That’s right! Your hands can make them too!
Jokes apart, you can actually make these stands at home with a simple DIY project. And I’m going to teach you how to make a cupcake stand. Just follow the article, and you should be good to go!
Every party needs cupcakes! They just go together so well. And the stands just add a tad of elegance to the entire theme. I mean, I know you can obviously buy one of these stands quite easily.
But where’s the fun in that? Making your own cupcake stand would be the perfect cherry on top of the, um, CUPCAKE! So, here’s how to do it!
Tools You’ll Need
Here are the things that you’ll need to make an amazing cupcake tower or stand. You can definitely switch things around if you think you have available alternatives.
- Three different sized Cupcake/ cake boards
- Styrofoam dummies for cakes
- Enough satin ribbons for the boards and the dummies
- Thick cardboard paper
- Double-sided tape
- Glue stick
- Craft glue
- Thumbtacks or metal pins
- A pencil
- A pair of scissors
Steps You Should Follow
Now that you know what things you’ll need to make that cupcake stand of yours, let’s get to making that fine piece of craftsmanship.
Sticking the Dummies Together
You have to start off with the Styrofoam cake dummies. Use the glue stick or the double-sided tape to stick the dummies together. Then, you have to let them rest so that the glue can dry adequately.
Wrapping with Ribbons
Pick out the best-looking satin ribbon you have around you and wrap the cake dummies with it. Make sure to reach all the nooks and crannies so that you can’t see the white Styrofoam.
Once you’re done wrapping, you have to attach the ribbon to the dummies with metal pins. You have to make sure that the pins are not coming out of the other way; otherwise, you may have to call an ambulance at your party.
Here’s a small trick. If you think you’re not proficient enough with the metal pins, you can always use glue to attach the satin ribbons to the cake dummies. In fact, this seems a lot easier for beginners.
Cutting Circles
Make sure you completely wrap up the entire stack of cake dummies. The big stack should not have any Styrofoam showing. Now it’s time to bring out the wrapping paper.
Choose the patterns, colors, and designs of your liking. You should keep the theme of your party in mind while choosing the paper. Now place your round cake boards on the paper and draw around them with a pencil.
It’s time to cut out the circles now. Use a pair of scissors to make your life easier. Cut out one for each cake board. Remember, these will be the surface of the cupcakes, so you better make them look good.
Glue Things Up
Bring out your trusty old glue stick and rub it on the cake boards. Then position the circled papers on top of the cake boards and place them according to the size. Don’t press in too hard as the papers might get damaged.
Slight dab across the surface of the papers, and you should have a smooth surface. Repeat the process with every other cake board and paper.
Make the Sides Pretty
You will also have to attach the ribbons to the sides of these cake boards. If you skip this step, your cake boards’ sides will show, which wouldn’t necessarily match the aesthetics.
Don’t worry about the attachments at all. You can comply just by using thumbtacks or metal pins. And, if you are in the mood, double-sided tape always does the trick!
Time to Assemble
Assembly time! This is the moment you’ve all been waiting for. You’ve probably spent hours making the preparations of making a cupcake stand, and now you just need to put the things together.
Place the largest cake board on the bottom, and follow the ascending order. Before you place the next board, place the dummy cake stack on the middle of the bottom board.
Attach the dummy cake with craft glue to the bottom surface. Then place the second board on top of the cake dummy with, you guessed it, craft glue!
You can make however many tiers you want in this fashion. But our instructions are for a triple-tiered cupcake stand. Here’s a little estimate for your party, you can arrange around 51 cupcakes on a five-tier stand.
Final Arrangement
Place the cupcakes on the cake boards around the dummy cake in the center. Arrange them however you like. You can truly get creative here if you want to. Your work should be done by now.
Some Pro Tips
That’s pretty much a simple, definitely not the only way to make cupcake stands. You can actually do it in much lazier ways.
If you absolutely don’t have the time to go through all the hassle, you can do this with a couple of plates and a glass with a wide brim.
Place the glass on a plate and then place the other plate on top of the glass. There you have it! Your perfectly wobbly cupcake stand is made in a matter of seconds.
You can get creative with the choice of glasses too. Whether you want to go wooden, plastic, or porcelain, you can add a little twist on each layer. Now that’s what I call creativity!
Since the stand will be filled with cupcakes, you need not worry too much about the glasses being too visible. And, who knows, your guests might even appreciate your little gesture here.
Useful Alternatives
Before finishing this off, let’s talk a bit about the different useful alternatives that you can use instead of the materials mentioned above in this article.
Plastic Cake Stand
A plastic wine glass should be around in your vicinity, along with a plastic plate. You shouldn’t be too surprised to know that you can whip up a neat little cupcake stand using these. If you’re worried about rigidity, don’t fret it.
That’s because it’s nothing a dollop of hot glue can’t fix. So try this out if you don’t have much time to do the big thing.
Household Items
Since we’re really interested in the DIY aspect, you can even whip up a great-looking cupcake stand with the utensils you have in your kitchen.
Well, the main thing you need is the stand to put the cupcakes on, right? Well, you can use your porcelain plates and a couple of ramekins for this too. You can even do the same with different household items.
Final Words
This article shows you how to make a cupcake stand in the simplest way. I know there are a lot more designs that might surprise you or catch your eye. But making those could be tough if you’re relatively new to the DIY world.
So, if you have the necessary tools and items, you too can make an awesome cupcake stand.
